A DEBATE has been ranging about whether or not in-form Newcastle striker Andy Carroll should be called up to represent England.
On the basis of what I’ve been reading this morning, the answer is a definite yes.
Because reports have it that retired Aston Villa striker Emile Heskey – a man with a worse goalscoring record than a fair handful of goalkeepers – is being targeted for a recall by England boss Fabio Capello.
Apparently Capello wants Heskey for the tie against Montenegro in the forthcoming international break, even though Emile stepped down from England after the World Cup, where he scored no goals.
Capello said: “I saw him against Wolves and he played very well. We will try to speak to him as we need him at this moment. He is in good form.
“We are talking about him for one game against Montenegro. He will have to decide.”
The news makes me shudder – and is hardly a vote of confidence for the likes of Carroll, Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, and Carlton Cole, who are all fit and available should Rooney and Defoe be out.
