FURTHER feathers have flown on football pitches in South America after a second bird died after being involved in the action.
Earlier this month Luis Moreno became a hate figure after booting a stricken owl which later died off the pitch during a Colombian football match.
And in Brazil this week, in a match between Gremio and Ponte Preta Prudente a southern lapwing that landed on the pitch was trodden on accidentally.
However rather than a chorus of boos from the audience, the referee recieved a standing ovation as he stopped play before carefully lifting the injured animal off the pitch and handing it to an official.
Sadly, the bird later died from internal bleeding.
Stadium administrator Odair Marcucci said: “It looked like it was getting better, but…it died. The bird was very fragile, especially since it was a young chick.”
