THE current media storm over Newcastle players Stephen Ireland and Leon Best visiting a nightclub has highlighted some seriously bad behaviour – however, it’s on the part of the media covering it.
Now as a journalist I love a good old scoop as much as the next man – but I fail to see why the duo are apologising today over their visit to Tup Tup Palace on the eve of their team’s Premier League 4-0 loss to Stoke.
Best and Ireland were both out injured, so were not part of the United squad beaten at the Britannia, and the duo weren’t even on the sauce, only drinking water and Red Bull.
In a statement, Best and Ireland said: “Although we had both been ruled out of the game at Stoke, and didn’t travel with the team, we realise that going out to a bar was inappropriate ahead of Saturday’s game and we fully regret doing so.”
I realise it’s a slow news week – just look back at some of the posts I’ve put up in the past seven days, jeez – but in my opinion, the only people apologising should be the struggling journalists who made this non-story into a quick headline.
