RUMOUR has it – or should that be wild speculation has it – that Southampton’s new manager Mauricio Pochettino is keen to land a big name at the last minute today.
And his former teammate, Aregtinean playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme., could be just the man.
Currently a free agent, the 34-year-old former Villareal and Boca Juniors man is rumoured to be in the process of a last gasp move.
IN THEIR search for a household name of the world game, Blackburn Rovers have been offered Argentinean playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme.
Agent Barry McIntosh has offered the Boca Juniors 32-year-old, formerly of Barcelona and Villereal, to the Lancashire outfit after swoops for Ronaldinho and David Beckham by new owners Venky’s failed.
He said: “I have spoken with Jerome Anderson, who is doing a lot of work for Blackburn Rovers, about Riquelme and it is being thought about.
“He could prove a great alternative to Ronaldinho, but there is nothing definite yet.”
AFTER his ultimately futile work against Liverpool for Napoli this week, the excellent Midfield Dynamo website has added Ezequiel Lavezzi to their list of the new Maradonas.
He follows in the footsteps of players including Carlos Tevez (2004), Juan Roman Riquelme (2003), Carlos Marinelli (2000), Pablo Aimar (1998) and Ariel Ortega (1992) in following in the footsteps of Maradona.
A spokesman said: “Often a doomed tag for the player concerned, but nearly every year another young player stars in Argentinian football and is dubbed ‘the new Maradona’.”
